At Newton Westpark, we aim to provide an environment in school where all children can access a broad and balanced education and achieve their full potential. We ensure that pupils are given appropriate learning opportunities and that a range of provisions are put in place to engage pupils in a full range of activities and to overcome barriers to their learning.
'Promoting a Culture of Achievement'
Pupils with SEND access the same broad and balanced curriculum as their peers. Teaching is adapted to meet individual needs, ensuring learning builds over time and supports long-term retention. Reasonable adjustments are made to support pupils with SEND to meet behaviour expectations, while maintaining high standards for all.
At Newton Westpark Primary School, we support children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) across the four broad areas of need set out in the SEND Code of Practice. These are:
-Communication and Interaction (including autism, which may affect communication and social interaction)
-Cognition and Learning (such as learning at a slower pace or difficulties with memory, attention, or understanding new concepts), -
-Social, Emotional and Mental Health (including emotional, behavioural, or attention needs such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
-Sensory and/or Physical Needs (for example, hearing, vision, or physical difficulties). Some children may have needs in more than one area.
Support is tailored to each child and may include adapted teaching, targeted support, specialist resources, and advice from external professionals. Our aim is to ensure every child feels supported, included, and makes good progress over time from their individual starting points.
We ensure that all pupils are fully integrated in the school community and engage in school activities.

We aim for early identification of any special educational needs and disabilities and this process starts from the first day children enter our school. If a child is attaining lower than age related expectations or progress is slower than expected but it is felt that the child does not have any specific needs, then appropriate intervention is planned for within the classroom.
If we suspect a child might have a specific educational need, then we will talk to the people who know the child best - the parents/carers.
With the permission of parents, we may seek additional advice from outside specialists such as health professionals, specialist teachers or educational psychologists who would:
- carry out further assessment of the child's needs
- provide advice to schools on how to best support the child
- suggest resources that would help the child make progress
Some of the outside agencies that we work with are:
-TESS - Targeted Education Support Service
-Educational Psychologists
-Occupational Therapy
-Speech and Language Therapists
-SSET - Specialist Sensory Education Team
-School Nurses
-School's Outreach Service
and many more dependent on the needs of the child.
If your child has special educational needs our SENDCO will:
- ensure the right support is in place for each child
- advise teachers and teaching assistants on how to help each child and ensure they have an up-to-date support plan detailing how their needs will be met in school
- arrange training for staff so they understand each child's needs
- work closely with parents on a regular basis to talk with them about their child's needs and listen to any ideas or concerns they might have
- work with all professionals who may be able to help individual children
- Track small steps of progress using a widely known assessment programme named BSquared
To ensure that parent/carers can keep up to date with their child's provision we now have 'Edukey' which is an online platform that parents of children on the SEN register can log into to see their child's pupil passport, learning plans and extra provision within school. This also gives you as the parent/carer to give your input on your child's targets and learning and to leave a message for the SENDCO - Mrs Lane- if you would like to discuss the learning plan in more detail. Your child's class teacher will give out the log in details and you can use the following link to access this:
