The 3 'I's (Intent, Implementation, Impact) and History policy

This document defines our vision for history: what we intend for our children to know, how we ensure high-quality teaching and learning of historical (disciplinary) skills, and the positive impact this has on their chronological understanding and cultural capital by the time they leave Newton Westpark.

Progression of skills.

Our Progression Map clearly shows the step-by-step journey of learning from Year 1 to Year 6. It ensures that knowledge, concepts, and skills—from developing a sense of time to analysing evidence—are taught in a logical, sequential, and chronological order.

History Long Term Plan

This plan details the specific historical periods and topics covered throughout the academic year for every class. It ensures comprehensive coverage of the National Curriculum and the coherence of our entire history curriculum.

In November 2024, Newton Westpark marked its 70th anniversary with a lively week of decade-themed celebrations. Each year group explored a different era from the 1960s onwards, learning about the fashion, music, sport, and events that shaped each decade.

The week ended with a whole-school assembly where pupils dressed as their chosen decade — or as the elderly — creating a fun and colourful tribute to the school’s history. Former governors joined the celebrations, and pupils enjoyed sharing stories from parents and grandparents about their own school days. It was a joyful milestone for our community as we celebrated 70 years on Tennyson Avenue and looked forward to the future.
