Writing

The 3 I's (Intent, Implementation and Impact) and Policy
This document defines our vision for Writing and what we intend for our children to learn about written communication, accuracy, and authorial craft, how we explicitly teach composition, grammar, punctuation and spelling through modelling and practice, and the positive impact this has on their fluency, confidence, and ability to write with precision for a range of purposes and audiences.

Progression of Skills
Our Progression Map clearly shows the step-by-step development of writing skills from Year 1 to Year 6 across key strands (Composition, Grammar, Punctuation, Spelling, Editing, and Handwriting). It ensures that children build their knowledge and control of language year-on-year, applying increasingly sophisticated structures and techniques within extended writing.

Long Term Plan

This plan outlines the specific units covered across the academic year for each class (e.g., narrative, non-fiction, poetry). It ensures full coverage of the National Curriculum expectations for English and these units support the integration of grammar, punctuation and spelling into meaningful writing contexts.

National Curriculum English

This link confirms that our combined approach to Writing and SPAG aligns with the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum, ensuring pupils develop effective communication skills, accurate linguistic control, and the ability to adapt their writing for different audiences and purposes.

SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar)

Spelling

Spelling is taught explicitly outside of daily English lessons and children practise these daily.

We encourage all children to practise their spellings at home and access these on Spelling Frame. Follow the link to access the website - Spelling Frame
