In Y2 the children have been learning about similies and adjectives in literacy. They have been using Harry Potter as inspiration for their writing and making use of the magical new writing corner. They are working so hard on improving their handwriting and spelling too!
This week year 5 had their first session with Paws B which is a company that teaches children about their brain and mind. We have started to learn the names for parts of the brain and how our mind works. We have been using meditation to help us focus our minds on specific tasks without becoming distracted. This has been difficult for some of us, including Miss Hesford. Read more to find out what else we have learned this week and to look at our pictures! Continue reading “Mindfulness in Year 5”
This week, builders from Keepmoat Homes came to teach KS2 about building site safety. We learned about how dangerous building sites can be and why we should never play on them. We also learned about the equipment and safety gear that builders use and wear to stay safe when working. Some of our year 6 children had the opportunity to try some of the equipment on. Have a look at the photos!
This week in maths we have been learning about measuring and have focused on weight. We looked at the difference in weight of fruit and vegetables and rounded this to the nearest 100g. We estimated first by feeling the fruit and comparing with 500g and 1kg weights and then we used scales to weigh them. We had a lot of fun and are looking forward to having fruit salad later this week 😄
As you may know, this week has been anti-bullying week. Each class has focused on a specific theme around bullying and year 5 focused on cyber-bullying. We had some really good ideas about how to prevent bullying online and we were very interested to find out more about Prince William’s new cyber-bullying campaign: Stop, Speak, Support. We created our own iPhone-styled posters to promote preventing cyber-bullying.
Today we have worn something spotty to raise money for Children in Need. Thank you to all the children and staff for all their efforts! We are very pleased to say that we raised over £195 for a great cause. Here are some photos of our favourite spotty outfits.
This week in Science year 4 have been looking at teeth. We learned about the different types of teeth, their role and also the anatomy of a tooth. We shared our dentist stories and looked at what can affect teeth. Next week we are doing an experiment to see which drinks are good for your teeth and which can cause decay. Keep a look out for our results!
Robins, Kingfishers and Owls have all borrowed a book today from the Infant Library. They are keeping them in their trays to read independently in class. They were very excited and showed us how much they love books! 😊📕📙📘📗
This half term, as part of our topic on healthy lifestyles, Year 6 are taking part in nationwide science investigations to find out more about the impact of exercise on our mood, attention span and working memory. This week, we investigated if 15 minutes of walking had an impact. First, we carried out mood, attention and memory activities online. We then walked for 15 minutes and did the same activities again. We will be carrying out different exercises over the next 2 weeks to see which type of exercise has the most impact.
Some children from Year 5 and 6 went to Golborne High School yesterday to take part in a basket ball tournament. Coby-Leigh from year 5 has written a report about the tournament:
‘Yesterday at the basketball tournament, we did a fantastic job representing our school. It was intense between a few teams but we enjoyed having the chance to play against other schools. We took part in this tournament to raise the profile of basketball as not many people play it in our country. We were very proud to finish 4th place.’
